## The short answer

**Choose HTML/CSS to Image if:**

- You mostly generate images, and want every plan to include them.
- You render HTML or URLs and need viewport, scale, selector, and timing controls.
- You embed image URLs publicly and want each one signed, not protected by a reusable auth code.
- You want to handle bursts without per-minute or concurrency limits.

**Choose APITemplate.io if:**

- PDFs are your main output: invoices, reports, and certificates with page layout controls.
- Data has to stay in a specific region, or you build on Bubble.
- You want asynchronous generation with webhook callbacks.

## Where they overlap

Both let you design a reusable template, send data, and get back a generated file. Both render raw HTML, host the output, generate images from a URL you can put in an image tag, offer official SDKs in several languages, and integrate with Zapier, Make, n8n, and Pipedream.

## Rendering HTML and URLs

APITemplate.io's image API starts from a saved template. It can also turn raw HTML or a URL into a PNG or JPEG through its PDF endpoints, but viewport, selector, and device-scale options aren't documented there.

HTML/CSS to Image treats HTML, URLs, and templates as first-class inputs, with viewport, scale, selector, and timing controls on every render.

## How the editors compare

Both have visual editors. HTML/CSS to Image uses one freeform canvas for every design, with optional flex and grid panels. APITemplate.io splits its editors by output: drag-and-drop for images, and a WYSIWYG or code editor for PDFs.

### HTML/CSS to Image

- One freeform canvas, with flex and grid panels where content should flow.
- Named variables for text, images, and colors, previewed as you design.
- Saved HTML/CSS templates when the design lives in code.

### APITemplate.io

- Drag-and-drop image templates, with built-in QR codes, barcodes, ratings, and charts.
- PDF templates in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with Jinja2, or a WYSIWYG editor.
- Markdown to PDF when the content is mostly text.

## Image URLs in public pages

APITemplate.io's direct URLs put a template image straight into an image tag or `og:image`. They authenticate with a static auth code in the URL, which you can limit with a quota and an expiration.

HTML/CSS to Image's template URLs are signed instead, so each request is protected without a reusable code sitting in your page.

## Where APITemplate.io goes further

PDFs are its core. Paper sizes, margins, custom headers and footers, `@page` CSS, and merging PDFs are all in the API, along with experimental ZUGFeRD and Factur-X e-invoices. A multi-page PDF counts as one credit.

Asynchronous generation calls your webhook when a file is ready, with three retries, and regional endpoints in Singapore, Frankfurt, US-East, and Sydney keep processing and storage in the region you call.

## Rate limits

HTML/CSS to Image has no per-minute or concurrency limits on creating and rendering images. APITemplate.io allows 100 requests every 10 seconds per IP and 100 concurrent synchronous PDF requests per account. Requests past those limits return HTTP 429.

## Pricing

HTML/CSS to Image has a lower starting price for images: $14/month for 1,000, versus $35 for 1,500 on APITemplate.io's Starter plan. APITemplate.io's PDF-only plans start at $24 for 3,000 PDFs, but they don't generate images. Overages are only available on Enterprise, on request.

USD, monthly billing, before tax. These are actual plans with their included allowances, rather than equal-volume estimates. Standard new HCTI images use one credit. A few advanced features use more, and overages are optional.

### Getting started

Entry plans that include image generation.

**HTML/CSS to Image:** $14/month for 1,000 images on Basic.

Includes templates, the visual editor, and hosted image delivery. A free plan includes 50 images per month.

**APITemplate.io:** $35/month for 1,500 images or PDFs on Starter.

The free plan includes 50 a month and three templates. PDF-only plans start at $24 for 3,000 PDFs but don't generate images.

HCTI has a lower starting price for images.

### Larger plans

Published plans with different included allowances.

**HTML/CSS to Image:** $69/month for 10,000 images on Basic.

Optional overages cost $10 per 1,000 images. Includes templates, hosted image delivery, storage destinations, and bring-your-own proxies at this volume.

**APITemplate.io:** $89/month for 9,000 images or PDFs on Standard.

Adds teams and 150 templates. A multi-page PDF counts as one credit. Unused credits don't roll over.

HCTI includes more images for less at this tier.

## Common questions

### Is APITemplate.io cheaper than HTML/CSS to Image?

HTML/CSS to Image has the lower starting price for images: $14/month for 1,000, versus $35 for 1,500 on APITemplate.io. APITemplate.io's PDF-only plans start at $24 for 3,000, and a multi-page PDF counts as one credit. Compare the plan allowance and output you need.

### Which is better for PDF generation?

APITemplate.io, if PDFs are your main output. It has paper sizes, margins, headers and footers, merging, and e-invoice formats. HTML/CSS to Image renders PDFs on paid plans, but it's built around images.

### Are APITemplate.io's direct image URLs signed?

No. They authenticate with a static auth code in the URL, which you can limit with a quota and an expiration. HTML/CSS to Image signs each template URL.

### Does APITemplate.io have rate limits?

Yes: 100 requests every 10 seconds per IP, and 100 concurrent synchronous PDF requests per account. HTML/CSS to Image has no per-minute limits on creating and rendering images.

## Comparison details

### Rendering inputs

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Render HTML/CSS or URLs with viewport, scale, selector, timing, font, and other controls. Convenience options include google_fonts and a ScreenshotReady() signal for your page's JavaScript.

The same options apply whether you send HTML/CSS or a URL.

**APITemplate.io:** Generate images from saved templates, or render HTML or a URL through its PDF endpoints with PNG or JPEG output.

Viewport, selector, and device-scale options aren't documented for HTML-to-image.

HCTI offers more control over HTML and URL rendering.

### Template designer

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Design freely on the canvas with text, images, shapes, and HTML. Mix free positioning with optional flex and grid panels. Named variables change content and styling.

**APITemplate.io:** A drag-and-drop editor for images, and WYSIWYG or HTML/CSS/JS editors with Jinja2 for PDFs.

HCTI uses one freeform canvas for every design. APITemplate.io splits editors by output.

### On-demand image URLs

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Signed template URLs generate images on first access, with variable values in the URL. Put one directly in an image tag, email, or og:image without a separate image-creation API call.

Available on Free and paid plans. Signing keeps your API key out of public pages.

**APITemplate.io:** Direct URLs generate template images in an image tag, authenticated with a static auth code rather than a signature.

Auth codes can have a quota and an expiration. Images regenerate only when the parameters or template change.

HCTI signs each template URL.

### Concurrency and rate limits

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Send image creation and rendering requests in parallel, with no concurrency caps or per-second or per-minute rate limits.

Image credits and plan limits still apply.

**APITemplate.io:** 100 requests per 10 seconds per IP, and 100 concurrent synchronous PDF requests per account.

Requests over the limit return HTTP 429.

HCTI has no per-minute creation or rendering allowance.

### Completion webhooks

**HTML/CSS to Image:** The normal create request returns an image ID and URL. Rendering happens when that URL is requested, so the create response does not confirm render completion.

HTML/CSS to Image has no built-in render-completion webhook. If your application needs a background job and callback, implement that orchestration yourself. Custom-storage-only output uses an authenticated PUT to the returned store URL.

**APITemplate.io:** Generate asynchronously and receive a webhook when the file is ready, with three retries.

APITemplate.io can notify your server when generation finishes.
