# HTML/CSS to Image vs ScreenshotOne

Both APIs turn HTML and webpages into images. HTML/CSS to Image is built for images you design, host, and reuse, with no per-minute limits. ScreenshotOne goes deeper on capturing other people's websites.

## The short answer

**Choose HTML/CSS to Image if:**

- You're generating your own images, like social cards, Open Graph images, or email graphics, and want templates and a visual editor.
- You reuse images in several sizes or formats, without paying new credits for each version.
- Your jobs arrive in bursts, and you don't want to pace them to a per-minute limit.
- You want hosted image URLs that stay up, not cached links that expire after hours or weeks.

**Choose ScreenshotOne if:**

- You need scrolling video, GPU rendering, or screenshots from a specific country.
- A completion webhook should trigger your next step.
- You'll run well past 10,000 screenshots a month, where $6 per 1,000 overages beat $10.

## Where they overlap

For everyday screenshots, either API will do the job. Both render HTML and URLs with controls for size, selectors, and timing, block cookie banners, output PDFs, and offer SDKs for JavaScript, .NET, Python, PHP, and more. Both also run a hosted MCP server with OAuth, though the tools differ: HCTI's create images and manage templates, while ScreenshotOne's capture sites and extract Markdown.

## Create once. Keep using it.

This is the difference most teams feel first. A social card might go out in an email, a feed, and a product page, each at a different size.

HTML/CSS to Image charges once, when the image is created. After that, re-rendering it, resizing it, cropping it, or switching it to WebP happens through the same URL without spending another credit. ScreenshotOne charges for each successful uncached render. Its cache covers identical requests, but a new size or format is a new request, and cached links expire after four hours by default and a month at most.

HTML/CSS to Image also deduplicates matching HTML/CSS creation requests for 30 days on Free and Basic, 180 on Pro, and 365 on Scale. URL screenshot deduplication is opt-in.

## Rate limits

HTML/CSS to Image has no per-minute or concurrency limits on creating and rendering images. Your application can send requests in parallel without waiting for a plan-based allowance to reset.

ScreenshotOne's Growth plan allows 80 request starts per minute. Even in the best case, assuming your site loads in one second, 1,000 images take roughly 12 minutes just to start the requests. Finishing a render doesn't free up another start in that minute.

Both accept batches with shared defaults and per-image overrides: up to 25 or 100 images per batch on HTML/CSS to Image's paid plans, and 20 per bulk request on ScreenshotOne.

## Templates instead of hand-built HTML

With ScreenshotOne, the design lives in your code. You build the HTML for each variation and send it, or host a page for every variation and capture that.

HTML/CSS to Image lets you save the design once, in the visual editor or as HTML/CSS, and send only what changes: a title, a price, a photo. A signed template URL can go straight into `og:image` or an email, and the image is created the first time someone requests it, with no endpoint of your own to run.

## Storage and proxies

Both upload to S3-compatible storage without resending credentials on every request. HTML/CSS to Image saves as many named destinations as you need and picks one per image or template, uses IAM role access for Amazon S3 instead of long-lived keys, and has presets for Cloudflare R2, Google Cloud Storage, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze B2, and Wasabi. That starts on the 10,000-image Basic plan. ScreenshotOne saves one default S3 configuration with per-request overrides, and includes uploads on its entry plan.

For proxies, HTML/CSS to Image reuses your own proxy by ID. ScreenshotOne also offers its own data-center proxies for picking an IP country on Growth and Scale.

## Where ScreenshotOne goes further

If you're capturing websites rather than generating images, ScreenshotOne has tools HTML/CSS to Image doesn't:

- scrolling video on Growth and Scale
- GPU rendering on Scale, with a software fallback
- screenshots from a chosen country through its own proxies
- webhooks when a render or S3 upload finishes
- page content, fonts, and metadata returned alongside the screenshot

Those are good reasons to choose it.

## Pricing

At 10,000 images a month, HTML/CSS to Image costs $10 less. Past that, ScreenshotOne's cheaper overages ($6 per 1,000 versus $10) catch up quickly. How often you reuse images matters just as much, because the two services count credits differently.

Monthly USD prices before tax, keeping the plans fixed with overages enabled. These examples assume distinct standard images at one credit each, without cache reuse, failures, annual discounts, or external storage and proxy costs.

### At 10,000 images per month

Standard images, monthly USD pricing.

**HTML/CSS to Image:** $69/month for 10,000 images on Basic.

Optional overages cost $10 per 1,000 images. Includes templates, hosted image delivery, storage destinations, and bring-your-own proxies at this volume.

**ScreenshotOne:** $79/month for 10,000 screenshots on Growth.

Overages cost $6 per 1,000. Includes geographic IP selection and video. GPU rendering starts on Scale.

Lower monthly cost at the included volume.

### When a month grows to 15,000 images

Keep the same plans with overages enabled.

**HTML/CSS to Image:** $119 for the month: $69 + $50 for 5,000 additional images.

Calculated using the 10,000-image Basic plan with overages enabled, keeping the selected plan fixed.

**ScreenshotOne:** $109 for the month: $79 + $30 for 5,000 additional screenshots.

Calculated using Growth without changing plans. Cheaper overages outweigh its higher subscription price in this example.

Lower total cost in this fixed-plan overage scenario.

## Common questions

### Is ScreenshotOne cheaper than HTML/CSS to Image?

It depends on your volume. At 10,000 images a month, HTML/CSS to Image costs $69 and ScreenshotOne's Growth plan costs $79. Past that, ScreenshotOne's overages are cheaper, so at 15,000 images it's $109 versus $119. If you use the same image in several sizes or formats, HTML/CSS to Image usually comes out ahead, because those variants don't use new credits.

### Which is better for Open Graph images, ScreenshotOne or HTML/CSS to Image?

HTML/CSS to Image. You design the card once as a template, then generate every variation from a signed URL in your og:image tag, with no rendering endpoint to host. The image stays at a hosted URL instead of a cache that expires.

### Does ScreenshotOne have rate limits?

Yes. ScreenshotOne limits request starts per minute: 40 on Basic, 80 on Growth, and 150 on Scale. HTML/CSS to Image has no per-minute or concurrency limits on creating and rendering images.

### Can HTML/CSS to Image record scrolling video?

No. HTML/CSS to Image captures full-page still images, not video. If you need scrolling or animated captures, ScreenshotOne is the better choice.

### Is it hard to switch from ScreenshotOne to HTML/CSS to Image?

Most capture options have an equivalent. For example, ScreenshotOne's device_scale_factor is device_scale in HTML/CSS to Image. HTML/CSS to Image returns a reusable hosted image URL. If your integration relies on a completion webhook, that part of the workflow needs updating.

## Comparison details

### Page content and response metadata

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Image creation returns JSON containing an image ID and hosted image URL.

The response is designed around creating and delivering images.

**ScreenshotOne:** Return HTML or Markdown content, detect fonts used by a website, and request image dimensions, Open Graph metadata, and HTTP response information. JSON responses can include screenshot and content URLs alongside the requested metadata.

Choose the content and metadata you want included in the JSON response.

ScreenshotOne can inspect website content and metadata alongside capturing it.

### Concurrency and rate limits

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Send image creation and rendering requests in parallel, with no concurrency caps or per-second or per-minute rate limits.

Image credits and plan limits still apply.

**ScreenshotOne:** Growth allows 80 request starts per minute, Basic allows 40, and Scale allows 150.

The allowance counts request starts, rather than active renders.

No per-minute image-request allowance to pace against.

### Hosting and caching

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Hosting and CDN delivery are included. Application-level caching keeps an existing image URL reusable, even after a CDN cache miss, without consuming another image credit.

Paid plans keep images while your account is active. Custom-storage-only images use your own delivery.

**ScreenshotOne:** Cloudflare CDN and R2 back its optional render cache. Cache misses can trigger another render and consume another credit.

Temporary image URLs last four hours by default, up to one month. For lasting hosting, use your own storage.

Built-in hosted delivery fits images you want to keep using in your product.

### When credits are consumed

Image creation and completed rendering are different billing events.

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Credits are consumed when an image is created, not each time it is rendered or downloaded. A standard new image uses one credit. Reusing it does not create another charge.

Creation is counted before the image is fetched or rendering completes. Longer delays (ms_delay over five seconds) and jumbo images can consume additional credits at creation.

**ScreenshotOne:** Successful uncached renders consume one credit per screenshot, PDF, or video. Failed requests do not count.

Cached downloads do not consume another credit.

HCTI charges once for creation and includes subsequent renders. ScreenshotOne charges for successful uncached renders.

### Duplicate image requests

Avoid paying again for identical work.

**HTML/CSS to Image:** An identical single-image POST can return the existing image ID and URL without consuming credits. HTML/CSS deduplication defaults to 30 days on Free/Basic, 180 days on Pro, and 365 days on Scale.

URL screenshots default to deduplication off. Enable it with dedupe_duration_s within your plan's limits. Matching is best-effort, so concurrent duplicates can create separate billable images. Templates and signed create URLs use their own content-based identity. This lookback parameter does not apply to batches.

**ScreenshotOne:** Enable cache=true to reuse the same combination of request options without another rendering credit. The cache lasts four hours by default, configurable up to one month.

An expired or missed cache entry can trigger a new billable render.

HCTI deduplicates image creation and keeps reusable image URLs. ScreenshotOne reuses cached renders.

### Resizing and formats

One image can serve several output needs.

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Re-render, resize, crop, or change formats using the same image URL, without spending more credits.

Changing the source HTML or creation parameters creates a new image.

**ScreenshotOne:** A different size or format can consume another credit, unless that exact request is cached.

Downloading an existing cached result doesn't use another credit.

HCTI includes render-time variants of an existing image without another credit charge, even when the requested output is not already cached.

### Storage destinations and access

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Save multiple named storage configurations in the dashboard and choose one by storage_destination_id for each image or template. Amazon S3 uses secure IAM role access without sharing long-lived AWS keys. Provider presets cover Cloudflare R2, Google Cloud Storage, DigitalOcean Spaces, Backblaze B2, and Wasabi, plus custom S3-compatible endpoints.

Available from the 10,000-image Basic plan and on Pro and Scale. Providers other than Amazon S3 require credentials during setup. Image requests reference the saved destination without resending its secrets.

**ScreenshotOne:** Upload to Amazon S3 or other S3-compatible providers, including Cloudflare R2. Save one default S3 configuration in the dashboard, with per-request bucket or credential overrides.

Available on Basic and above. Amazon S3 setup uses an access key and secret, while HCTI uses an IAM role.

HCTI offers multiple saved configurations, provider presets, and AWS role access. ScreenshotOne documents one saved default with request overrides and includes uploads on its entry plan.

### Proxy configuration and geography

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Bring your own proxy, configure it once as an organization resource, and reuse proxy_id across image requests. Render callers do not need to resend the proxy password.

Available from the 10,000-image Basic plan and on Pro and Scale. Authenticated proxies require credentials during setup.

**ScreenshotOne:** Choose an IP country through ScreenshotOne's supplied data-center proxies on Growth and Scale. You can also supply your own proxy.

The supplied geographic proxies are not residential proxies. The documented custom-proxy request takes a proxy URL, including authentication when needed.

HCTI saves reusable proxy configurations. ScreenshotOne supplies geographic IP selection.

### What an AI agent can do

**HTML/CSS to Image:** An agent can create images from HTML/CSS, URLs, or saved templates, generate batches, and create or update templates. It can also manage shared proxies, storage destinations, and Open Graph configurations.

Tools respect your plan and approved OAuth permissions. PDF and batch creation require a paid plan. Resource management requires additional permissions.

**ScreenshotOne:** An agent can capture websites, extract Markdown, and check usage. Website captures support full-page slices and optional page-content extraction.

The documented hosted tools focus on websites, without template management or bulk creation tools. Screenshot URLs last up to four hours, and MCP captures disable API caching.

HCTI gives agents image, template, and resource tools. ScreenshotOne gives them website-capture and content-extraction tools.

### Batching

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Create image variations with shared defaults and per-image overrides in one request. Basic and Pro allow 25 images per batch, and Scale allows 100. Batching is also available through MCP.

Batches return image IDs and URLs, with rendering on access. Each created image consumes its own credits. Free accounts use individual creation requests.

**ScreenshotOne:** Send up to 20 HTML or URL requests to the bulk endpoint, with shared defaults and per-request overrides. It returns screenshot URLs. Set execute=true to render before responding.

The plan's per-minute request allowance still applies. Bulk creation is separate from its hosted MCP tools.

HCTI offers larger batches on paid plans and an MCP batch tool. ScreenshotOne can render a bulk job before returning.

### HTML/CSS templates and editing

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Save reusable HTML/CSS templates and send variable values when creating images. Use the visual template editor when you want to design without writing the layout in code.

Template and media allowances vary by plan.

**ScreenshotOne:** Bring your own HTML templates. Its documented social-image workflow prepares the design and variable substitution in your application, then sends the HTML for rendering.

Design and variable substitution stay in your application.

HCTI includes reusable templates and a visual design editor.

### Scrolling video

**HTML/CSS to Image:** HTML/CSS to Image does not offer scrolling video or animated screenshot output.

Full-page still screenshots are supported. Capturing a tall page as one image is different from recording a video as it scrolls.

**ScreenshotOne:** Scrolling screenshots and video generation are offered on Growth and Scale.

Choose this when you need motion output, rather than only a full-page still image.

ScreenshotOne offers motion output that HCTI does not.

### GPU rendering

**HTML/CSS to Image:** HTML/CSS to Image does not offer a GPU-rendering option.

If your workload specifically needs hardware-accelerated rendering, evaluate ScreenshotOne's GPU option with representative content.

**ScreenshotOne:** GPU rendering is offered on Scale.

Software fallback is possible. You can request an error instead if GPU rendering is unavailable.

ScreenshotOne offers an optional GPU rendering path.

### Async jobs and completion webhooks

**HTML/CSS to Image:** The normal create request returns an image ID and URL. Rendering happens when that URL is requested, so the create response does not confirm render completion.

HTML/CSS to Image has no built-in render-completion webhook. If your application needs a background job and callback, implement that orchestration yourself. Custom-storage-only output uses an authenticated PUT to the returned store URL.

**ScreenshotOne:** Run a render asynchronously and receive the result through a webhook, including workflows that upload to S3 before notifying your server.

This is useful when another job must start after rendering or storage completes. It is a different contract from immediately receiving an image URL that renders on access.

ScreenshotOne can notify your server when a render completes.

### Operating history

**HTML/CSS to Image:** Launched in 2018.

A longer operating history is useful context, but does not establish better uptime or rendering quality by itself.

**ScreenshotOne:** Launched in May 2022.

The founder dates its public launch to May 2022.

HCTI has been serving image-generation customers since 2018.

## Switching from ScreenshotOne

- Map request fields such as device_scale_factor to device_scale. Check fonts, dimensions, and waiting behavior with your own content.
- If your existing integration relies on a ScreenshotOne completion webhook, moving to HTML/CSS to Image requires changing that workflow. A successful image-create response is not proof that rendering or an S3 upload has completed.
- Keep existing image URLs and stored files in mind when switching. A new API integration does not migrate your previously generated assets.
