The short answer

Choose HTML/CSS to Image if

  • You want images, not browser sessions: send HTML, a URL, or template values and get a hosted image back.
  • Designers need to change images without touching automation code.
  • You'd rather pay per image than in 30-second browser units.
  • Bursts shouldn't depend on how many concurrent browsers your plan allows.

Choose Browserless if

  • You already have Puppeteer or Playwright scripts that need remote browsers.
  • The job includes logins, interactions, or extraction, with proxy or CAPTCHA options.
  • You need a self-hosted or Enterprise deployment in your own environment.

Where they overlap

Both have APIs for HTML and webpage screenshots, with PDF output and ways to wait for your content before capturing. Browserless also runs remote browsers for your own Puppeteer and Playwright scripts.

What Browserless is built for

Browser automation. Connect an existing Puppeteer or Playwright script, reuse sessions, or use its APIs for capture and content extraction. Its cloud also offers proxy and CAPTCHA options for sites that need them.

HTML/CSS to Image is built around the image instead: the design, the variations, and where the finished image lives.

Cloud and self-hosted are different choices

With Browserless Cloud, you run your automation code while Browserless runs the browsers. With a self-hosted deployment, you also own capacity, upgrades, monitoring, and network access, and the open-source container doesn't include every Cloud or Enterprise feature. Check the deployment and license you need rather than treating them as interchangeable.

What HTML/CSS to Image adds

In either Browserless deployment, the workflow around the screenshot is yours to build: storage, image URLs, caching, and templates. HTML/CSS to Image includes it. Save templates in the visual editor, generate variations from signed URLs, serve images from a CDN, and resize or reformat an existing image without new credits.

Image hosting and reuse

HTML/CSS to Image

Hosting and CDN delivery are included. Application-level caching keeps an existing image URL reusable, even after a CDN cache miss, without consuming another image credit.

Paid plans keep images while your account is active. Custom-storage-only images use your own delivery.

Browserless

The screenshot API returns image output. Your application supplies persistent image delivery and reuse rules.

Concurrency

Browserless Cloud plans set a maximum number of concurrent browsers, and self-hosted deployments are limited by the machines you provide. HTML/CSS to Image has no concurrency caps or per-minute limits for image requests.

Parallel rendering

HTML/CSS to Image

Send image creation and rendering requests in parallel, with no concurrency caps or per-second or per-minute rate limits.

Image credits and plan limits still apply.

Browserless

Cloud plans set maximum concurrent browsers. Self-hosted deployments configure session and queue limits against their available capacity.

Plans and pricing

What you're paying for

Browserless Cloud bills in units: a browser connection uses one unit for up to 30 seconds, with more units for longer sessions. Reconnecting starts a new connection, and proxies and CAPTCHA solving can add usage. A unit isn't necessarily an image, since one connection can perform several actions.

HTML/CSS to Image bills per created image, with reuse and image variants included. For self-hosted Browserless, budget for your machines and the applicable license instead of Cloud units.

Getting started

HTML/CSS to Image

$14/month for 1,000 images on Basic.

Includes templates, the visual editor, and hosted image delivery. A free plan includes 50 images per month.

Browserless

Browser-time units and image credits measure different things.

A production image service

HTML/CSS to Image

$69/month for 10,000 images on Basic.

Optional overages cost $10 per 1,000 images. Includes templates, hosted image delivery, storage destinations, and bring-your-own proxies at this volume.

Browserless

Cloud charges for units. Self-hosting uses your infrastructure and applicable license.

Include your own image storage and delivery when comparing costs.

Common questions

Is Browserless cheaper than HTML/CSS to Image?

It depends on how long your captures take. Browserless Cloud bills in units, one per browser connection of up to 30 seconds, and its free plan includes 1,000 units a month. HTML/CSS to Image bills per image, from $14/month for 1,000, with hosting and resized variants included.

Can I run my existing Puppeteer scripts on Browserless?

Yes. Point your Puppeteer or Playwright scripts at its remote browsers. HTML/CSS to Image takes HTML, URLs, or template values directly, without browser scripts to maintain.

Does Browserless host the screenshots?

No. The screenshot API returns the image, and persistent storage and URLs are up to you. HTML/CSS to Image returns a hosted image URL.

Can I self-host Browserless?

Yes, through its open-source and Enterprise deployments, which have different features and licensing. HTML/CSS to Image is a hosted API.
